| Resumo | For the tropics, rainfall is the principal meteorological element that directly affects aspects of human life. In Northeast (NE) Brazil, the interannual variation of rainfall is large and in some years the seasonal deficiency of rainfall leads to severe drought conditions, Different rainfall regimes in NE Brazil have been previously identified. In the north of the domain (NME) the principal rainy season is short and occurs during March-April, in the south (SNE) most of the precipitation falls during the period December through February, and in the eastern part (ENE) the rainy season is April through July (Strang, 1972). For the latter region, the spatial variation of annual rainfall is high: while the interior receives less than 600mm of rainfall annually, the coastline receives around 1600 mm (Kousky and Chu, 1978). |
